NORTH WALES CUP FINAL.

PWLLHELI RFC  15   CAERNARFON RFC 46

Pwllheli were comprehensively beaten but a bigger and more structured Caernarfon team.Caernarfon thoroughly deserved their win as they outscored Pwllheli by six tries to three.

Pwllheli's three try scorers were  Rhodri Scott ,Lee Oliver and Dafydd Myrddin who was Pwllheli's most impressive player on the day.Rhodri suffered a broken foot in the act of scoring his fine try.Such was our injury list this was Rhodri's first rugby match of the season!!

This was Caernarfon's first North Wales Cup win since 1979 but on this showing they can confidently look forward to more.

Caernarfon are also to be complimented on their magnaminouus response to their victory.Pwllheli players were invited and accepted an invitation to stop off at Caernarfon's club house on their way back to Pwllheli from the match. They were well looked after and the gesture is appreciated.

APRIL 24,2010.

PWLLHELI RFC  36  COLWYN BAY RFC 20

Conditions were ideal for Pwllheli's last league game of the season. The pitch was firm but well grassed and there was only the lightest of breezes to influence the game. The home side were more concerned about Colwyn Bay's recent excellent form and their own mounting injury list.

Pwllheli started strongly as they took on their larger opponents on up front. After only three minutes play they executed an effective driving maul for late replacement flanker Lee oliver to touch down.Colwyn Bay reacted well and reduced the defecit to five points to three with a Tom Duffy penalty. The home side were dominating the forward exchanges and their second try after sixteen minutes was a mirror image of the first. The scorer was scrum half Tomos Henri.Full back Gethin Roberts was successful with the conversion.
Colwyn Bay began to look good with ball in hand and at the start of the second quarter they looked threatening but the final execution let them down.Pwllheli's pack upped a gear and their third try came from set piece dominance. From a Pwllheli scrum the pack put their opponents on the back foot and wheeling the scrum to the right created the space for Richard Hughes to power over.Colwyn Bay were not done and they shocked their hosts when Ian Marshall scored a well taken individual try on forty two minutes. He added the conversion to leave Colwyn Bay very much in the game at half time trailing by only seventeen points to seven.

Pwllheli had another wakeup call after only four minutes into the second period.Flanker Dave Brown finished off phases of pressure rugby to touch down. With the score now standing at seventeen to fifteen Pwllheli had it all to do once again.Fortuntaely they had enough in the tank .Pwllheli's bonus point try came from centre Euros Thomas who finished off a sweeping movement on the right.Five mintes later Richard Hughes beat the cover to crash over and with Roberts' conversion Pwllheli were fourteen points clear. The visitors were still not done and on forty minutes centre Dai Howelll scored his side's third try.Not to be outdone Euros Thomas scored his side's sixth try after forty two mintes and Roberts' conversion was the last action of the match.

The result leaves Pwllheli in fourth place this season. The team's progress is a tribute to the hard work of the players and coach Eifion Jiffy Griffith. This is still a young side and they will continue to develop and improve.

Pwllheli's focus now of course goes to Sunday's North Wales Cup Final which is being held at Bangor RFC.Kick off 2.30.Their opponents are uncertain as Nant Conwy have appealed the result of their semi final with Caernarfon. It is alleged that Caernarfon played two ineligible players who had supposedly played for English club Chester. The outcome of the appeal is nothing to do with Pwllheli but team preparations will vary dependent on who the opposition is to be.The team coach will leave the club at 12.00.The supporters bus will leave the Maes at 1.00.

NANT CONWY RFC  31  PWLLHELI RFC O

Pwllheli knew that Nant away was going to be a tough challenge and so it proved.Once again the referee was busy in issuing our team yellow cards. This time Dylan LLyr-again!!!!!!!!!!!!-and Tin Tin were the recepients. The torrent of yellow cards is a real concern .Rarely have they been awarded for foul play and we surely need to approach the refrees organisers to ask how and what we need to change to improve this current surge of cards.

Nant were full value for their win and deserved their bonus point win.Pwllheli played much better than they had at Ruthin and will be disappointed to return home without scoring a point for the first time this season.

Pwllheli's interface with referees took an unusual twist in the match.Pwllheli's prop Aaron Owen injured his knee -when the referee fell on him.Pwllheli may not be flavour of the month but this is taking matters too far!!!!!!!!!!

APRIL 10,2010

RUTHIN RFC 58  PWLLHELI RFC 8

It was a case of after the Lord Mayor's show as Ruthin demolished Pwllheli in a one sided match.Pwllheli's previously excellent defensive record was shattered in this nine try to one defeat.Pwllheli did travel to Clwyd with a much changed side but they are desperately disappointed with the lacklustre display.

We play Nant away next Thursday-kick off 7.30.

APRIL 3,2010.

PWLLHELI RFC 55 DENBIGH RFC 16

MarkPwllheli went into this match on the back of two defeats.Once again selection had to be delayed because of uncertainty as to player availability.Fortunately weather conditions held and other than a light wind conditions were excellent.
From the outset it was obvious that the visitors were committed to a straightforward game plan. When they won the ball the ball was hoisted by the hefty boot of their flyhalf Howartson.Kick and chase was the order of the day.Pwllheli had planned for the tactic and they were not pressured into running every ball they gathered. The team however are beginning to grasp that you play what is front of you rather than rigid adherence to any theoretical game plan. This freedom of expression played dividends.

After only five minutes Pwllheli countered from deep and the move was well finished by prop Alwyn Trenholme.Pwllheli's fullback Gethin Roberts added the conversion.Denbigh cut the defecit with a tenth minute penalty by Howartson.Denbigh's bulky pack got stuck in but they were undone again after twenty five minutes when late replacement lock Mark Saynor fielded a kick in his own twenty two.He made thirty metres before off loading .Two supporting players intepassed before Saynor took the final pass to crash over.
The Lleyn side were now very much on top.Denbigh were unable to cope with Pwllheli's neat interpassing and centre Dylan Morris sliced through after twenty eight minutes to score under the posts.Roberts added the two points.Five minutes later Pwllheli secured their try bonus point when the sharpness of scrum half Patchett saw him beat the cover to score a trademark try.Again Roberts converted.Denbigh did get a consolation penalty score by Howatson but Pwllheli led by twenty six points to six at half time.

The first ten minutes of the second period saw Denbigh charge out of the blocks. They were aggressive in the scrums and in the loose. They were duly rewarded after wing Dan Sullivan scored a very well taken try after forty six minutes.Sadly for the visitors they were unable to maintain this frenetic pace and Pwllheli gradually took control once more.Lock Saynor scored two tries in quick succession to secure his hattrick and with Roberts converting one Pwllheli were now well clear.Wing Tomos Henri scored a try after sixty two minutes and prop Trenholme made it a double for himself three minutes later.Roberts' conversion of the latter took Pwllheli to fifty points. The busy Patchett scored his second after seventy minutes to complete Pwllheli's scoring.

Denbigh scored a consolation try through Phil Morris. The game then slipped away as a spectacle as Pwllheli ran out comfortable winners.
Pwllheli are way to Ruthin on Saturday in a league match. The bus leaves the club at 11 .00.Supporters welcome.

MARCH 27,2010.

MOLD RFC 30 Pwllheli RFC  24

Pwllheli have never won at Mold and earlier in the week confidence was high that Pwllheli had an opportunity of changing the record books.Sadly as the week went on it became clear that Pwllheli had a crisis in respect of unavailable and injured players. They were eventually able to cobble a decent side together but as they had no front row substitutes they were forced to travel with the bare minimum fifteen players.Their coach Eifion Griffiths was also unable to get to Mold and the pre match warm up was taken by Dr Dewi Roberts who probably hoped his coaching days were over.
The visitors started strongly and took a deserved lead with an eleventh minute penalty from wing Gethin Roberts.Mold responded strongly and used their forwards effectively to punch holes in the Pwllheli midfield. They were rewarded with a try after twenty six minutes.
All went pear shaped for Pwllheli in the last three minutes of the first half and the first few minutes of the second period.During this time span Mold scored two converted tries and a penalty.Pwllheli in contrast lost a second row after thirty eight minutes and a centre after 40 minutes ,both of whom were yellow carded. As soon as both carded players returned to the fray Pwllheli duly lost a prop for ten minutes when he was yellow carded.
Many teams would have buckled at this stage and being twenty five points to eight down but Pwllheli staged a stirring fight back.On sixty two minutes Fly half Elgan Rowlands scored a try which Roberts converted. They gave themselves real hope when ten minutes later -amd having fifteen players on the pitch-they scored their second try through centre Dylan Morus.Again Roberts converted narrowing the defecit to only eight points. As it was it was fated that Pwllheli would lose another player.Flanker Meilir Hughes had to leave the pitch with what has transpired to be a serious cruciate injury. As they had no substitutes they saw out the match with fourteen players.
Mold took full advantage and scored their bonus point try after seventy four minutes.Pwllheli were not done and scrum half Gareth Patchett scored Pwllheli's third try.Gethin Roberts' conversion saw that some justice was done when his conversion secured a losing bonus point. It is to their credit that they finished the match the stronger team but as Wales have found this season yellow cards can have devastating consequences.
Pwllheli now need to regroup and prepare to meet bottom club Denbigh at Bodegroes on Saturday.Denbigh had an excellent win on Saturday against high flying Bro so an interesting match could be in prospect.

The crowd and players will be asked to observe a one minute silence before this match as a mark of respect to Alan Henri Williams who died suddenly last week.Alan was a faithful club sponsor and supporter and father of Pwllheli scrum half Tomos Henri. The club's sympathies go to all the family.

11-3-2010
Pwllheli RFC 15 Ruthin RFC 8.

Mike AdamsThis floodlit second leg North Wales Cup match was a fiercly contested affair from start to finish.Ruthin had travelled to the Lleyn for this rearranged fixture with high hopes on building on their slender two point lead from the first leg.Their team and coaching staff were fired up and from the outset closed down Pwllheli's space. After only three minutes they were gifted a penalty attempt as Pwllheli held on in the ruck.Though the kick was virtually under the posts the kick missed.Pwllheli's right wing Gethin Roberts showed how it was done when he was successful with a fifty metre penalty.

The home side tried to build continuity by going through the phases but in a match punctuated by incessant whistle they were unable to maintain pressure on the visitors. As it was Ruthin scored their only try courtsey of a missed touch kick .The loose kick was gathered by Ruthin 's left wing and as Pwllheli were unable to reorganise their defence Ruthin countered and touched down out on the left. The conversion missed.Pwllheli kept their focus and took the game to Ruthin again. Both sides were trying to play rugby and for a neutral this would have been a good game to watch. It took however until the thirty fourth minute for Pwllheli to restore their lead.Pwllheli's Huw Williams broke off from a maul in Ruthin's twenty two and galloped over to score to give Pwllheli an eight points to five lead at half time.

The second period was taut as both sides gave their all.Ruthin drew level with a good penalty strike by Adam Robson to put Ruthin ahead again in the overall competition.Pwllheli then suffered on onslaught of penalties against them and their self discipline was admirable in the circumtances.Depite this Dylan Llyr was yellow carded after sixty four minutes for being offside.Pwllheli rallied and with his first touch in his first appearance for a year replacement centre Mike Adams score Pwllheli's second try.Showing the value of a reliable kicker Gethin Roberts' immaculate wide out conversion put Pwllheli seven points clear. It was now Ruthin who rallied and they pressed hard for the win.

With penalties against the Lleyn side coming thick and fast it was no real surprise that Pwllheli endured a second yellow card when centre Elgan Rowlands was carded. The last ten minutes was all Ruthin and thier commitment was very evident.Endeavour as they might Ruthin could not breach the outstanding home defence. The final whistle went with Pwllheli going through to the semi final of the North Wales Cup.Fortune has favoured them for once as they have a home draw against either Mold or Dolgellau .This match must be played before April 18. Ruthin will be frustrated at their missed chances especially their lack of a goal kicker.

Pwllheli in turn endured a huge penalty count against them which frustrated both players and the sizeable crowd. It is to the credit of both teams that tensions did not boil over and although it was a hard match it was never a dirty one. Pwllheli will now need to regroup as they have a tough away fixture away to Bro on Wednesday March 17.

MARCH, 6, 2010
Pwllheli RFC 39  Llandudno RFC 7.

Gethin BodlasThis was a match played in perfect conditions for rugby with a firm pitch and no wind. Both teams had not played since January and it showed.Llandudno travelled with a much changed backline from the side which had lost heavily at Llandudno earlier in the season and they squared up from the outset. After only a minute Pwllheli threw out a long miss pass to the right.Sadly for Pwllheli it was grabbed by one of the best players on the pitch-Llandudno'r Rhodri Carlton Jones -who gleefully raced fifty metres to score under the posts. The score and subsequent conversion by Carllton Jones  rattled Pwllheli and their attempts at a riposte were thwarted by either poor handling or wrong option taking. At this stage the visitors were fighting for every scrap and they unsettled Pwllheli. The home side were awarded a penalty for the efforts but the attempt drifted well wide.It was not until the twenty second minute that Llandudno yielded their first try. With the ball being quickly recycled in Llandudno's twenty two Dylan Llyr saw a gap in the rush defence and cut clean through to score.Seven minutes later Pwllheli finally took the lead.Once again quick ball was fed to debutante scrum half Gareth Patchett who darted through to score a neat  try.Pwllheli were now on top and it was no surprise when Pwl;lheli's number eight,Richard Hughes, bulldozed over on the thirty fifth minute to score under the posts.Dylan Llyr added the conversion to take the score at half tome to Seventeen to seven to Pwllheli.

If Pwllheli thought they were going to have an easy ride in the second period they were very much mistaken.Llandudno flew into the tackles and also competed well at the set pieces.Pwllheli lost their pattern and although they rarely threatened the Pwllheli line their aggressive defence was very effective. The  home side regrouped and finally were able to put in a devastating fifteen minute spell which overwhelmed the tiring Llandudno team..On sixty seven minute ssecond row Huw Willimas scored his seventh try of the season as he touched down following a driving maul. With the try bonus point in ther bag Pwllheli relaxed and turned on a fluent display of open rugby.Substitute Chris Studt scored Pwllheli's fifith try to be followed soon after by his impressive back row partner Harri Parri. The coup de grace came from fly half Dylan Llyr who jinked his wat through Llandudno'r cover to scire under the posts. The added conversion rounded off Pwllheli's much needed home win. With Mold losing to Bro Pwllheli remain in contention for the third place spot.

Pwllheli have only a brief respite before they resume league action. They play Bro Ffestiniog away on Wednesday 17 Match.Kick off is at 7.30 for this tough fixture..
Pwllheli host Ruthin RFC at Bodegroes this eveningMarch 11-in a second leg North Wales Cup match.Kick off is at 7.30.Ruthin lead by 15 to 13 from the first leg.The aggregate scoring system means that Pwllheli need to win by more than three points to go through to the Semi Finals.

JANUARY 30,2010.
Pwllheli RFC 13  Caernarfon RFC 22

Despite the cold snap the pitch at Bodegroes was in  an excellent playing condition. With the largest crowd of the season of over 300 people there was an air of expectancy about the encounter.

Pwllheli took the game to Caernarfon from the start and they dominated the opening exchanges. They starved the visitors of any worth worthwhile possession  while launching a series of attacks of their own.The home side took the lead after six minutes of play.Winning the ball forty metres out the ball went along the Pwllheli backs.Fullback Owain Williams joined the line and cut through the cover defence. His well timed pass saw right wing Gareth Wright crash over in the corner. The conversion attempt drifted wide.Caernarfon took the lead in bizzare and controversial circumstances.A speculative kick ahead was  not dealt with by Pwllheli's left wing.He was tackled in possession.Caernarfon robbed the ball and went for the try line. The ball was clearly dropped in the act of scoring but despite Pwllheli's protests the score was awarded.Kelvin Morris' touchline conversion was immaculate and put Caernarfon an unlikely seven points to five ahead.

Pwllheli rallied but it took until the twenty ninth minute before their efforts were rewarded.Winning the ball a full thirty metres from the Caernarfon line they set up a driving maul. The effort was unstoppable as they carried the ball up to and over the opposition try line for second row Huw Williams to score.Again the conversion drifted wide.It is some years since Pwllheli so dominated a Caernarfon pack and the large crowd cheered the endeavour of Pwllheli's forwards. It was typical of the match that virtually on half time that Caernarfon were awarded a penalty over forty metres from Pwllheli's posts.Sadly for Pwllheli Kelvin Morris was in fine kicking form and his kick sailed through the posts for the teams to go in for half time tied at ten points each.

Caernarfon started the second period strongly. After only five minutes they sucked in the Pwllheli defence on the right and moved the ball left. With a clear overlap the gap opened for Kelvin Morris to glide through to score  a well worked try.Pwllheli regrouped and once again took the game to the visitors. They cut the defecit to only two points after fifteeen minutes with a Dylan Llyr penalty.Pwllheli maintained the ressure but Pwllheli could not break Caernarfon's organised defence.Pwllheli succumbed to the sucker punch on the forty second minute of the second period.Trying to run the ball Pwllheli lost possession.Kelvin Morris saw that Pwllheli's defence was misaligned and put in the sweetest of kicks which Caernarfon's dYlan Parry gleefully latched on to  and scored under the posts.Justice was not done when Morris' conversion deprived Pwllheli of even o losing bonus point.

This was a game that Pwllheli could and should have won.Their pack dominated the visiting forwards in every aspect of the match. They took several strikes against the head in the scrum and regularly stole Caernarfon's lineout ball.Territorially also Pwllheli had a huge advantage but they wewre unable to convert their superiority into sufficient points to win the game. Despite this Caernarfon won because they managed their possession better .Their line kicking was flawless  and they took advantage of all opportunities they were given. They were also expecting to win and this must give any team a huge psychological boost.True they were gifted seven points with their first try and conversion  but their winning score was the result of the vision displayed by Kelvin Morris at fly half.Caernarfon earned the win and deservedly sit on top of the Division One North league table.

JANAURY 23,2010 ,

Pwllhli RFC 19  Llangefni RFC 10

Pwllheli have a poor record in recent years against Llangefni both home and away.Though conditions were ideal for rugby with a firm pitch and only a slight breeze both started with  a great deal of uncertainty.Handling  errors abounded and option taking was uncertain. Both sides had had a lengthy enforced lay off and it showed.Pwllheli tried very hard in the first half but Llangefni were always threatening on the break. Pwllheli have recently been able to depend on secure first phase ball but although the scrums went well  their linesout  were not up to their usual standard.

With referee Edwards trying to let the game flow both side had their chances but defences had the upper hand.Rucks and mauls were fiercely contested and big hits seemed to be the norm. Each side tried to gain advantage through their kicking game but only with a modicum of success.Try as they might could not get any concerted flunecy into their pattern of play. They looked really good in patches but could not hold on to possession for long enough to go through the phases.Llangefni edged the first period. They should have scored a try when their right wing was put in the clear. It took a superb effort by Pwllheli's second row and captain to drag him down two metres short of the line. Clearly Pwllheli had it all to do in the second half.

At the start of the second period Llangefni went ahead with a well taken penalty from full back Arwel Roberts. They then rocked Pwllheli with along distance try from scrum half Robert Evans.Llangefni had attacked from their own half and Pwllheli seemed to have the move covered.Llangefni's  left wing however outwitted the cover to scythe through before releasing a well timed pass for scrum half evans to score.Wing Tom Williams added the conversion to take the score to ten points to nil.

This stirred Pwllheli. They began spinning the ball and created several chances before full back Owain Williams finished off an eight pass movement to score wide on  the left. The conversion drifted wide .Pwllheli were now unstoppable and their secind try came from a powerful short range burst from number eight Richard Hughes.Llyr's conversion gave Pwllheli a two point lead.Llangefni attempted to riposte but the home side extended their lead when flanker Harri Parry scored their third try.Llyr's conversion ended the scoring in what had been very much a match of two halves. The Lleyn side ended very much on top and it is hoped they can replicate this form on Saturday when title contenders Caernarfon are the visitors.

Pwllheli's second fifteen kept their lead at the top of the Gwynedd League with a close fought fourteen to three win over a much strengthened Bangor fifteen.Pwllheli 's second string have still only conceded one try throughout this league campaign.

DECEMBER 5,2009.

Colwyn Bay RFC 9 Pwllheli RFC 23

Despite the dank and dismal weather the pitch stood up well throughout the match. Both teams had not played in weeks -and it showed.

It was the visitors who started by far the stonger. With their pack dominant in both set and loose the backs had a bucketful of quality possession.Though Colwyn Bay were under the cosh they restricted Pwllheli to two early penalties kicked by fly half Dylan Llyr.Pwllheli did not chose their options well during this phase of the match. They created at least four gilt edged try scoring opportunities but were unable to finish them off.To their immense credit the home defence held and against the run of play they reduced the defecit with a Sean Mc Donagh penalty after fourteen minutes. It was Mc Donagh again on twenty seven minutes whose second penalty levelled the scores.Indeed they had the opportunity to go ahead after thirty four minutes when they missed a very kickable penalty.Pwllheli continued to press and some of their phase play was impressive -until the required clinical final pass. The half finished with Pwllheli very much on top but with the scores tied at six points apiece.

The Lleyn side had the wind in their favour in the second period and made ground with some raking kicks from their fly half.It took until the fifty third minute for Pwllheli to break down the stubborn defence. An incisive break from recycled ball saw burly centre Dylan Morus Williams take a flat pass to score under the posts.Llyr's conversion gave Pwllheli some breathing space.Pwllheli threw on their replacements and their freshness gave Pwllheli some more impetus in their play.It was Williams again eight minutes later who took a difficult pass to cross over .Llyr added the two points.Mc donagh reduced the defecit with his third penalty but Llyr took the score to twenty three points to nine in Pwllheli's favour with his third penalty.

Pwllheli were very much the better team throughout and created chances from start to finish but in an error strewn match they were pleased to come away with a good away win.Pwllheli's outstanding player was flanker Dafydd Anwyl who made a powerful case to be reinstated long term in the flankers' berth.Gareth Wright was also impressive on the right wing They will be a little concerned that they only scored the two tries but they will be less ring rusty when they take on Ruthin away on Saturday in the second round of the Swalec Plate. The coach leaves the club at 10.30.a.m.Supporters welcome.Selection will be interesting with several key players being available for the Ruthin fixture.

The League fixtures have another lengthy enforced break and do not resume until January 9,2009 when they face a resurgent Bro Ffestiniog away.

Pwllheli's second team maintained their leadership of the Gwynedd League with a comfortable if scrappy 26-3 win away to Holyhead.

NOVEMBER 14,2009
Denbigh RFC 28     v   Pwllheli RFC  24

Pwllheli go through to the second round of the Scottish Power North Wales Cup on the aggregate score of 84 -28.

Given the atrocious weather it was only possible to confirm the match at 11.15 Saturday morning and the team's departure for Denbigh was delayed as a result. The team had eight enforced changes but it did give coach Griffiths the opportunity to look at several players who had been excelling in the second fifteen.Five players were making their first tean debut for the season.

With Pwllheli taking a sixty point lead from the first leg motivation should have been a problem for the Lleyn team. However despite the poor pitch conditions they scorched into an early fourteen nil lead with two converted tries.Denbigh however are a proud club and they were determined not to be overwhelmed as they had been at Bodegroes a few weeks previously.Their heads did not drop and despite Pwllheli scoring two further first half tries Denbigh kept in touch with a try and two penalties to take the halftime score to Denbigh eleven Pwllheli twenty four.

Pwllheli's scores came from two tries from second row Huw Williams and one apiece from scrum half Tomos Henry and fullback Gethin Roberts.Dylan Llyr added two conversions. The second period was Denbigh's.Pwllheli fell into the trap of competing up front depite their five pack changes from the first encounter.Denbigh saw their chance and with passion and drive they gradually cut into the Pwllheli lead.As it was they were to score seventeen unanswered points in the second half to take a wholly deserved if unexpected vicory. October 31, 2009
Pwllheli RFC 60 v Dinbych RFC 0

Conditions were well nigh on perfect for this first round first leg North Wales Senior Cup match. The break from League rugby allowed Pwllheli to look at new permutations in the back row, wings and front row. With three of Pwllheli's mainline props unavailable second row Mark Saynor moved to his debut front row game.

Pwllheli started well and were awarded a penalty after less tha a minute. With normal kicker Dylan Llyr unavailable kicking duties were taken over by right wing Gethin Roberts. The kick soared over for an early three nil lead.Denbigh caem back strongly and created several opportunities which were only repulsed by strong Pwllheli defending.

Pwllheli's first try came from number eight Richard Hughes who saw he was matched against a Denbigh second row and beat him for pace to score in the corner after twelve minutes.Denbigh again dug deep and the match was nip and tuck for the next fifteen minutes as the teams vied for supremacy. The Lleyn side had one fifty metre roolling maul before flanker Carl Studt crashed over for a try which Roberts converted. On thirty four minutes fly half Elgan Rowlands bamboozled Denbigh's cover as he slid through untouched for Pwllheli's third try.Roberts added the two points.Pwllheli led at half time by twenty two points to nil.

The second period started badly for the vistors.Within three minutes of the restsart fly half Rowalnds scored his second try which was gain converted by Roberts.Though Denbigh never gave up Pwllheli began playing some attractive balanced rugby. They let the ball do the work and tries came regularly. On forty nine minutes second row Huw Williams added to his growing tally with a powerful score.Roberts added the conversion to take away the last vestiges of hope for Denbigh. It was Roberts who scored the next try following a scorching run on the right and he was able to major his own score.Centre Dylan Morris got on the score sheet after sevty minutes and he was quickly followed by tries from David Lloyd Williams and Harri Parry who clinically exploited the tiring Denbigh defence.Roberts added one conversion to gave him a personal tally of twenty for the match.

This was the third time Pwllheli have scored sixty points this season but they do recognise that Denbigh are not having the best of times this season.Nonetheless the coaching team are fortunate that they have a squad of twenty five all of whom are genuine contenders for first team places. The team ar developing together and they will need to maintain hteir focus and commitment if their development is to be maintained. The return fixture is planned for Saturday week -November 14- at Denbigh.Supporters are asked to monitor the club website for further details.

Pwllheli's next League fixture is not until December 5 th when they play Colwyn Bay away. They now await the draw for the second round of the Swalec Plate. This match is scheduled for December 12.

Pwllheli's seconds went down 10-5 at Menai Bridge whilst the Youths beat Llandudno in a League match by forty three points to twenty two.

Pwllheli RFC 42 v Rhuthun
6

Conditions were unexpectedly good at Bodegroes following the recent heavy rain. There was a swirling wind to contend with which did not really favour either side.

The home side started strongly and put Ruthin on the back foot from the kick off.Learning form previous games Pwllheli took all the goal kicks that came on offer .Fortunately for Pwllheli Dylan Llyr was in fine kicking form as he kicked his first penalty after only a minute followed by two others after four and ten minutes.Ruthin rallied and tried ,with some success,to take the game to Pwllheli.Their lineout functioned well throughout the match whereas for Pwllheli it did not go as well as in previous weeks.Ruthin's scrum half Will Davies reduced the defecit with a penalty after seventeen minutes.Ruthin then blew a golden chance to score as they cut through the Pwllheli defence in a prearranged back of the scrum move.It was then Pwllheli's turn  to be generous as they missed two clear cut try scoring opportunities by scorning blatant overlaps.Pwllheli  added two further penalties through Llyr on twenty one and thirty six minutes but Will Davies gave Ruthin a fighting chance by kicking a penalty with the last kick of the first half.Half time score Pwllheli fifteen Ruthin six.

The opening twenty minutes of the second half saw both packs vying for supremacy. It was Pwllheli who came out on top.Their set scrum  had the nudge on Ruthin who yielded a series of penalties as their front row was buckled by Pwllheli's pressure.

Ruthin fought hard to keep in contention but theri defence was breached after sixty minutes when hooker Kevin Morris finished off a slick passing movement.Llyr added the two points and four minutes later kicked his sixth penalty of the day.Pwllheli then used their powerful bench and the physical prsence of both second row Mark Saynor  and prop Bleddyn Davies madea huge impact.Ruthin's tiring scrum was further pressured and the faltering defence was relentlessly made to put in a seemingly non stop series of tackles.Pwllheli's second try came from close range pressure as they were awarded a push over try from Huw Williams who had switched to eight.Five minutes later the versatile Chris Studt who had come on as a repalacement wing scored Pwllheli's third. The coup de grace came at the death.A sloppy relieving kick from Ruthin  was picked up by Pwllheli's full back David Lloyd Williams .He scythed through the would be cover to score the home side's fourth and bonus point try.Llyr added the conversion.

This was a substantial win for the Lleyn side against quality opposition with Dylan Llyr in top form and scoring twenty two points.Ruthin did not play badly but they were put on the back foot by a fitter and more cohesive team.Pwllheli edged every facet of play  but had to keep their structure to do so.Though Pwllheli are by no means the finished article they hope they are beginning to earn the grudging respect of some of their opponents. They will rue their missed opportunities but will be pleased that chances were created throughout the eighty minutes.

The result will give coach Griffiths another selection headache as some of their second fifteen also made a strong claim to be included in Saturday's home North Wales Cup match against Denbigh.

Denbigh 7 Pwllheli RFC 24

Pwllheli travelled to Clwyd on the back of a good win against Mold but knowing that their track record in Denbigh was poor.Several key players were also missing but this gave coach Griffiths the opportunity to blood some less experienced players.Denbigh are not having a good season to date but they targetted this match to begin their recovery.

Though the match was not a spectacle of rugby Pwllheli will be helped by being able to dog out victories.Their pack was again the basis of their victory as they wore down the resilient Denbigh defence.Pwllheli threatened throughout the match but it is a matter of work in progress to attain consistent backline fluency.

Pwllheli scored three tries in the first period with the threequarters claiming all the scores.Fullback David LLoyd Williams scored the first and third and wing Euros Thomas scored the second to notch up his fifth try of the season .Fly half Dylan Llyr who came close to scoring following several incisive breaks added the solitary conversion.

Pwllheli led at half time by seventeen points to nil.

Pwllheli were fortunate to have a strong bench and it was replacement second row Mark Saynor who scored Pwllheli's fourth try.Llyr added the conversion.Denigh continued to battle and they deserved their consolation try and conversion fifteen minutes before the end.

The Lleyn side were delighted with the four try bonus point win which moves them up to fourth in the table. They meet Denbigh twice over the next few weeks in the two legged format of ther North Wales cup.The first leg is at Bodegroes on October 31.

Pwllheli welcome Ruthin to Bodegroes next week knowing that they will be smarting from their unexpected home defeat against Bro last week.

OCTOBER 10,2009
PWLLHELI RFC 21 MOLD RFC 18

With the pitch in perfect condition and the overnight rain having softened the surface conditions were ideal for this much awaited fixture agaianst league leaders Mold.Mold were clearly intent to prepare well for the contest and arrived at Bodegroes a full two hours before kick off. As it was Pwllheli started much the more alert.Straight from the kick off they drove right through the heart of the Mold defence only to be stopped inches short of the line.Mold were penalised for illegally slowing down the ball and Dylan Llyr kicked the penalty to put Pwllheli ahead with barely a minute on the clock.

The next few minutes were all Pwllheli.Their forwards dominated the larger Mold pack in the set and were quicker to the loose ball.Pwllheli scorned a very kickable penalty chance but despite being under presssure the superb Mold defence held.. Mold are clearly a quality outfit. They turned defence into attack and it was Pwllheli's turn to be penalised for killing the ball. The eighth enalty took the game to three points all.Pwllheli then gifted Mold their first try.

Pwllheli won turnover ball in their twenty two and they decided to spin the ball.A midfield pass was dropped and Mold gratefully took the opportunity to score .With their confidence restored Mold's speedy backs looked increasingly threatening.Pwllheli were punished for being caught offside and the ensuing twenty third minute penalty pushed them eleven to three ahead. It was now all Mold .It was Pwllheli's turn to defend and they did so well until a mixture of bad luck and Mold's winger's pace which saw them score their second try.Mold kicked ahead on the left wing but Pwllheli's cover was there in strength but the bounce of the ball beat two defenders while the sheer speed from Mold saw a fine touchdown after thirty three minutes. The touchline convesrsion was an excellent one. In virtually the last move of the half Pwllheli earned a penalty and Llyr'r kick kept them in contention.Half tome pwllheli six mold eighteen.

The first minutes of the second period saw Mold strive to biuld on their lead.Pwllheli's pack however held fast and they began pressing Mold's eight. From a lineout twenty metres out Pwllheli started aun unstoppable rolling maul. Two metres short of the Mold line prop Alwyn Trenholme peeled off to crash over for his first try of the season.Though the kick missed Pwllheli's intensity told on a wearying Mold eight.Pwllheli's second tr come from a typically powerful burst from second row Huw Williams.

Pwllheli were by now very much on the front foot. With the pack rejuvenated by replacement props Pwllheli now had Mold firmly in their sights. The breach came on seventy minutes. and it was only right that the winning score came from Pwllheli's oustanding openside Harri Parry crossed wide out on the right. He turned in a second successive Man of the Match performance and was an excellent link between forwards and backs.

Mold then threw everything into the attack but in so doing they left their defence exposed.Pwllheli intercepted a wayward pass just outside the Mold twenty two but agonisingly could not hold on to the ball. When the whistle went Pwllheli's supporters breathed a sigh of belief but truth be said they were the better side on the day.Pleasing as the result was Pwllheli know they have a lot more work to do to gain the consistency they crave.

They are away to Denbigh on Saturday but are well aware that Pwllheli's record away to Denbigh is not good so only their best is likely to be good enough.Pwllheli and Denbigh will get to know each other well of the next weeks as they face each other on October 31 and November 14 in the two legged first round of the North Wales Cup.

This was the game that Pwllheli clearly should have won but lost it with the last kick of the game. If nothing else it showed the value of closing games down and taking chances as they come. The experience will be put down as part of the learning curve of this still developing team.
