Pwllheli scorers against Bala.

Pwllheli beat Bala in an exhilirating game which was as closely fought as the final score suggests, but with ten minutes gone in the second half the prospect of even coming a close second seemed remote.

Pwllheli opened the scoring with a converted try by Dylan Llyr. Bala took the lead with a penalty through full back Ynyr Jones and a try of their own scored by scrum half George Davies with Jones converting, before further extending their lead to 17-7 on the half hour with a second try from their No8 Rhys Davies, with Jones again succeeding with the conversion, before Dylan Llyr cut the deficit after 36 minutes with a penalty.

The deficit was reduced further with the opening score of the second half through the boot of Dylan Llyr.

Bala scored their third try through Brian Davies, converted by Jones after 10 minutes and things looked bleak for the visitors with the score standing on 24-13. Pwllheli fought back bravely and the impressive Geraint Parry, scored a try after a quarter of an hour to begin Pwllheli's fightback.

Things began to go Pwllheli's way after 23 minutes when a home forward was yellow carded and after 30 minutes and under mounting pressure the Bala defence succumbed and the referee awarded Pwllheli a penalty try which was converted by Dylan Llyr to take the score to 24-25.

This set up a pulsating last 10 minutes which was played out in ding dong fashion with both sides attacking in turn, The final whistle seemed an eternity in coming, with the referee adding five minutes injury time, the Pwllheli defence held firm andthe victory was ours. This magnificent win sets the team up for the final league match at Ruthin in two weeks time knowing that a victory will secure our future in Division IV at the expense of Newtown.

March 31st 2007

Asda League Division 4 North

Pwllheli 21 Ruthin 18

Well done lads.

After going behind by 3-18 Pwllheli fought back in the second half of this vital league game against Ruthin and came out winners in the end by the narrowest of margins 21-18. Things did not begin well on Saturday as the Ruthin attack cut through the Pwllheli defence numerous times to set up a commanding lead. Grit and determination brought us back into the game and a solid second half performance stopped Ruthin from adding to their score.

Tries from Mike Adams and Thomas Henry and eleven points from the boot of Dylan Llyr ensured that Pwllheli can now look forward to the end of the season with renewed optimism.

Things did not go all Pwllheli’s way on Saturday as Denbigh won at Llandudno, 16-13 to maintain a three point cushion ahead of us and the dreaded drop to Division V. This realistically means that Pwllheli need to win two of their remaining three games to have a chance of staving off relegation. So there is everything to play for still.

Next Saturday is a must win game, at home to Colwyn Bay. Come and support the lads.

Our congratulations go to Mold on securing the Division IV title with their 53-14 victory at Wrexham on Saturday, who with this defeat are relegated.

Whilst Mold were winning away at Bala to extend their advantage at the top of the table there was little change at the bottom with the three teams holding up the rest all losing.

Pwllheli failed to leapfrog over Newtown, who open up a five point gap between the two teams by virtue of their 21-30 win, although Pwllheli have three games in hand over them.

In ideal conditions and glorious weather more akin to the end of April than the first week in February everything was set fair for an exciting game of rugby at Bodegroes on Saturday.

The saying ‘a game of two halves’ was never more true than on Saturday with Pwllheli dominating the first half and opening a comfortable lead of 14-3 by half time and the home spectators looking forward to further scoring after the break.

Unfortunately it was Newtown who came out for the second period with all guns blazing. Whatever was said by the visiting coach during the interval worked wonders. The veteran Gerrard moved from full back to outside half and totally dominated the game. After reducing the deficit with a converted try, Newtown took the lead for the first time with their second try of the game after 15 minutes and further extended their advantage with another converted try to make the score 14-24. A drop goal by Horabin took the visitors 13 points clear.

Pwllheli scored a well taken try wide on the right through Hicks with seven minutes remaining and with Dylan Llyr’s excellent conversion came within one score of their opponents. In a nail biting last five minutes it was Newtown who held their own and completed the scoring with a Peeters drop goal in the dying seconds.

Pwllheli's first try today - click for more photos.

Pwllheli took the lead after 15 minutes with a converted try but determined play by the Cofis and two converted tries made the score at the interval 7-14. With the wind in our favour in the second half things looked promising and even when Caernarfon scored another try all was not lost. Pwllheli raised their game and came back within one score with a converted try halfway throught the second half. Pwllheli had their best spell and one score could have sealed the game but it was Caernarfon who scored another try to take the game beyond Pwllheli.

An extremely disappointing result on Saturday. Although the lads gave it their all it was not quite enough against a side with a solid structure and game plan. The team must now look forward and focus on next Saturday and the journey to fellow strugglers Wrexham, who have secured two victories in recent weeks.

Once again the coach will have some head scratching to do before naming his side. In addition to the current injury list, Tryfan Edwards, Lee Oliver and David Williams are all unavailable. Bleddyn Davies is also a possible absentee. It never rains but it pours.

Miraculously, despite the atrocious weather across North Wales yesterday, all Division 4 games went ahead. Pwllheli lost their first game of 2007 away at Llandudno by 13-0 and with Wrexham winning their second successive game at home to Colwyn Bay the team now find themselves in basement position in the Division.

Pwllheli played against a gale force in the first half. After one minute Pwllheli tried to kick the ball out of defence only to see the ball ending 45 metres further back and within 5 metres of their try line. From the lineout Llandudno drove over for a touchline try and a superb conversion took the score to 7-0.

For the next 25 minutes Pwllheli were dominant with Colin Jones outstanding. Pwllheli however, failed to turn superiority into points. Things looked like changing on 32 minutes, however, when Matthew Hicks scythed through the Llan defence, racing 50 metres downfield but failing to take advantage of a two against one attacking position and a golden opportunity to draw level.

It was Llandudno who finished the half the stronger and increased their lead with two distant penalties late on.

In a scoreless second half a very streetwise Llandudno team managed to deny Pwllheli possession and were able to stifle what opportunities came our way.

After a promising start to the campaign and despite heroic performances in the Konica Minolta Cup, league form has evaded the team as injury after injury to key players has decimated the squad. With games against Mold and Nant Conwy coming up in quick succession after the middle of February the team desperately need a win to boost their morale and there would be no better place to achieve this than at Bodegroes next Saturday against Caernarfon.

Meanwhile at the top Mold returned to winning ways beating Denbigh at home by 21-0, opening up a six point gap at the top. In second place, Nant Conwy who had a free Saturday are a point ahead of Caernarfon who were held to 13-13 draw at home to Bala.

Hope to see in Efailnewydd next Saturday.

Konica Minolta Cup - Round 4

Abercynon 29 Pwllheli 24

This was a match thta should set the standard for the rest of the season. The team did well against First Division opposition. It was the pack who earned the plaudits from the hosts with Dylan Llyr's direction and play impressing. Tries from Tryfan Edwards and Bleddyn Davies together with a cracking drop goal, a conversion and three penalties from Dylan completed Pwllheli's scoring.

Abercynon have been drawn away to Bridgend in the next round. We wish them well.

Pwllheli needed to win this game and were more convincing winners than the scoreline suggests. Tries from Carl Studt, Mark Saynor and Matthew Hicks with kicks from Dylan Llyr saw the team through to their second win of the season.

November 18th 2006

Nant Conwy 20 Pwllheli 16

With Pwllheli's injury list lengthening with each game there were no less than six enforced changes to the team that travelled to the Conway Valley on Saturday. Despite this the young team played well and nearly pulled out a win by finishing the game the stronger team. The team now need to put this defeat out of their minds and start preparing for their next league game against Denbigh on December 2nd.

Pwllheli 8 Mold 24

A below par performance, Pwllheli never really got out of first gear and were well beaten by an efficient and well disciplined side. Although  we played well in patches, the lineout never worked and the scrum was constantly under pressure. Mold fully deserved their victory after dominating the game for long periods. Radim Fajkus's injury is another one to add to the already bulging treatment room. Pwllheli nee d to regroup and come up with a strategy to take some of the pressure off themselves.

Konica Minolta Cup - Round 3

Pwllheli 12 Rhydyfelin 9

Despite the fact that both teams were missing key players the large crowd witnessed Pwllheli's most committed performance for many years to defeat a Rhydyfelin side who are third in Division 2 East. Rhyd used they beefy pack to bludgeon the Lleyn side from the kick off. Pwllheli spent considerable periods on the defensive and were on the wrong end of a series of penalty kicks. It was inevitable that such pressure would reap some reward and the visitors took the lead with a penalty after 20 minutes.

However, try as they might they could not breach the Pwllheli cover. Pwllheli's tackling was ferocious and would no doubt have surprised the opponents. Lee Oliver stood out knocking over opponents far bigger than himself in the contact area.

Rhydyfelin extended their lead with a second penalty after 24 minutes and it seemed as if they might throttle the life out of Pwllheli's game, but Pwllheli dug deep and gained just reward from increased confidence in the scrum after 15 minutes of the second half. The scrum released the back line who progressed to the Rhydyfelin 22 before moving the ball left to Dylan Llyr who popped a delicate pass to the rampaging Geraint Parry who crashed over under the posts. With Llyr's conversion Pwllheli gained confidence and had their sights set on a famous victory.

Rhydfelin had one last flurry left and took the lead with a well taken drop goal with barely two minutes left on the clock. Unlike the match at Newtown, Pwllheli did not panic and reverted to what they do best, which is using the skill and power of the backs. Matthew Hicks received the ball wide out and left several would be tacklers in his wake before interpassing with centre Mike Adams. Adams's burst from 20 metres out was unstoppable as he crashed over wide on the left.

The failed conversion was the last kick of the match.

Make no mistake this performance was from the very top drawer. The players dug deep when it mattered and the scalp of their illustrious opponents was well deserved. Man of the match was Pwllheli's second row, Geraint Parry.

October 14th 2006

Newtown 6 Pwllheli 5

Once again Pwllheli came away from Newtown with the narrowest of defeats. The team started well with a try by Mark Saynor but could not capitalise on early dominance. Newtown hung on and got stronger as the match went on. Pwllheli finished strongly but the home side hung on for a deserved win.

Pwllheli 75 Wrexham 10

Though Wrexham were not of the same calibre as Pwllheli's two previous league opponents they still defended stoutly for long periods in the game.

Pwllheli scored eleven tries and Dylan Llyr's return to first team action saw him notch up twenty five points with a try, two penalties and seven conversions. Man of the match was centre Dylan Morris with four well taken tries.

Caernarfon 30 Pwllheli 12

Pwllheli's poor run of form continued with a lacklustre display against a well organised and committed Caernarfon XV. Pwllheli were rarely in contention as Caernarfon recorded their best score against Pwllheli for more than a decade. With even more enforced changes thrust upon them, the coaching team must be looking to stabilise the starting XV before the visit of Blaina next week.

Medi 16eg 2006

Pwllheli 29 Llandudno 44

Pwllheli's disorganised performance bore no resemblance to the display of the previous week. Gone was the consistency and fluidity and with it went the confidence.

Llandudno fielded a team with a good mix of youth and experience and fully deserved their win. They surprised the home side with their commitment to the tackle and their rush defence stifled many attacks before they got any momentum going.

There were brief flashes of a Pwllheli fightback and although had a try disallowed and hit the post with a penalty attempt they were exposed far too often in defence to derive much comfort from the game. They managed four tries but leaked six, in what is normally a very frugal defence. True they were missing key players through injury and unavailability but this Llandudno side will give most Division 4 sides a good run for their money.

Konica Minolta Cup Round 1

Pwllheli 75 Talywain 15

The previous encounter between these two sides had seen Talywain thump Pwllheli by over 50 points. It took only two minutes of the match to see that there would be no repetition. The opening ten minutes was as food a performance of quality rugby as has been seen at Bodegroes for many years. The home side used the full width of the Bodegroes pitch to launch assaults on the Talywain line. Three tries were scored in this opening period.

The match was then overshadowed by a serious injury to centre Terry Adams. It transpired that he had broken and dislocated his ankle and has since been operated upon. The injury quite naturally threw Pwllheli's focus but the team gradually recovered its poise to run out deserved and comfortable winners.

The Club now face Division 3 club Blaina at home in the next round on Saturday September 30th. Kick off 2.30pm.

Pwllheli RFC 54 North Wales Barbarians 7

This pre-season friendly was a good test for the home side. The score flattered Pwllheli in that only resolutr defence kept the Barbarians at bay on half a dozen occasions.

The home pack stood up well to the larger visiting pack and although more work still needs to be done on set pieces the signs are encouraging. Pwllheli's pacy backline were devastating after breaking the first line of defence but they will br stiffer tests ahead. A pleasing and encouraging result.

Machynlleth 17 Pwllheli 34

Pwllheli's opening pre season match was a dour show in the opening half. Pwllheli did not gel and the match was punctuated by too many handling errors. Pwllheli found their rhythm in the latter stages and were well on top by the final whistle.

There were encouraging displays from youth products Euros Thomas at fly half and Alwyn Trenholme at prop. Both laid a marker which will be difficult to ignore in the months to come.
