NOVEMBER 3,2009 . The disappointment of the Swalec competition continues with the realisation that all North Wales clubs will face each other in Round 2 of the Plate.Today's draw has radically reduced the excitement and prospect of playing clubs in other parts of Wales. It will do very little to generate interest amongst supporters and players alike.Last year's competition was a breath of fresh air for many clubs in North Wales-we will have to wait to see the reaction to the new less attractive format. The new Swalec structure means that only Premiership and Division 1 sides can enter the Swalec Cup proper. Division Two and Three sides plus Division 1 North enter the Swalec Plate.Unlike last season a defeat in the Plate will not mean a second opportunity in the Bowl. Division 4,.5 and 6 sides plus Division 2 North go into the Bowl and can progress no further.. The net result of this is that one defeat means that you are out of the Competition.Last year we lost by two points away to Third Division Cardigan-in our best performance of the season-before going on an excellent run in the Plate which saw us reach the last 16 in Wales. Changes in structures will hit the Club badly. We already have no home League fixture for three months between October and January.Changes in the Swalec will mean we will have to be at our very best to pass the first hurdle. Our Youth team are even worse hit being in a League with only five other teams!!! erience and club income will undoubtably suffer. To partially compensate for the above loss of matches the first two rounds of the North Wales Cup will now be based on both home and away matches. JULY 28,2009

David took over the reins at the Club two years ago after the first team's relegation to the then Division Five North. The effect of the loss of status was exaggerated by no fewer than nine senior players withdrawing from senior rugby. In the last two years the changes in personnel have been substantial. Promotion was earned in the first season but clearly more difficult times were to be faced in Divison One North. This season started well but the team has faded in recent months. The last six games - in a disappointing run towards the end of the campaign saw Pwllheli playing with squads where only two or three players were over the age of twenty five. No overseas players have represented the club this season for the first time in many years. This move was instigated by the coach. This strategy has exposed more players to senior rugby which was another of the club's targets. Despite performances and results not reaching the hoped for heights David's brief was to keep us safe this season as we were confident we would emerge stronger in season 2009-2010. This aim was achieved and the bonus was having an excellent run in the SWALEC Plate. The Club wish to formally thank David for his efforts which have given us the foundation for the future. The Club would now ask that everyone involved at Clwb Rygbi Pwllheli rally round and give the new coach the support that he deserves. |
