Gwynedd Cup Final

Nant Conwy RFC13 Pwllheli RFC 22

Pwllheli's second team won the Gwynedd Cup for the first time in their history in fine style on Monday night. Nant started strongly and were the stronger side for the first twenty minutes of this Final which was played at Bro Ffestiniog.Their scrum had the edge, their lineout was solid and their open play was typically Nant being robust and powerful. They took the lead through two well taken penalty kicks but despite the slope, breeze and possession Pwllheli's line was never seriously threatened. The Lleyn team's cohesion and balance of youthful talent and experience gradually saw them come to match Nant and then inexorably to begin to dominate in crucial areas.

Pwllheli's scrum began to get an edge and they were also able to make inroads into Nant's lineout.

Pwllheli pressured Nant and they had their just reward when number eight Huw Williams crashed over after Pwllheli had threatened several times. Gethin Roberts added a tidy conversion. Both these players were part of Pwllheli's Youth structure last season and the policy is critical to Pwllheli's future. Pwllheli ended the half ten to seven in the lead as Roberts added his first successful penalty.

Pwllheli extended their lead with a forty metre penalty from centre Roberts and with Nant strengthening their front row in the second period their chance to get something out of the game came when Pwllheli had a prop yellow carded.

They took advantage by scoring a try which was duly converted to reduce their deficit to only three points. Pwllheli rallied and Nant's chance was lost. They particularly struggled in the scrums and they were also being beaten consistently to the loose ball.

It was the prodigious boot of Gethin Roberts which stretched Pwllheli 's lead with three further penalties.Their lead was never again seriously threatened and the game ended with Pwllheli fully deserving their victory.

Captain Colin Jones accepted the trophy on behalf of the Club but the victory belonged to the squad's spirit, dedication and the hard work and commitment of Dilwyn "Nosey" Jones and Ian Studt who was Man of the Match on the night.

May 7th 2008

Pwllheli's reward for reaching the Gwynedd Cup Final is a floodlit night match against Nant Conwy, at Bro Ffestiniog on Monday May 12th - kick off 7.30pm.

The Club were given no choice in the matter as the Gwynedd Committee had already accepted that Nant could not field a team on either of the next two Saturdays.

There was no prior consultation and Pwllheli's objections were over ruled. It had been hoped that a Saturday match in Gwynedd would have generated far more interest than a Monday night fixture.

April 4th 2008

More bad news for the concept of Division 5 rugby in North Wales.

Rhayader this week became the second club this season, after Bangor last September-to pull out of the league. They have informed the WRU that they will not be fulfilling their remaining 8 league fixtures this season. This will of course impact on Pwllheli who had an outstanding home fixture to be rearranged with them.

This in turn hits the bar income but most importantly does not give Pwllheli the  opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the division. We do not yet know how their withdrawal will effect league placings. This will be a decision made  by the WRU Regulatory Committee. We are now trying to find out when this decision will be made.

Pwllheli still have matches each Saturday between now and April 26th with only Rhos being an away fixture on April 12th. The most crucial match of these is probably our home fixture against Bro Ffestiniog RFC at Bodegroes tomorrow. A win would put some daylight between us and our other close challengers. A defeat would put everything back in the melting pot. Come and support!

March 31st 2008

Two Pwllheli players have exceeded 100 points to date in league rugby this season. Fly half Elgan Rowlands' points total is 107 through 3 tries, 40 conversions and 4 penalties. Mike Adams reached the milestone at Rhyl on Saturday 29th March with his twentieth league try of the season. This is an exceptional feat by both players in so few games; Elgan in 12 and Mike in 9 games.

With six more crucial league matches to go lets hope we can see more of the same in the final run in towards the end of the season.

Both players are fulsome in their praise of their teamates who made most of these scores possible. No fewer than 12 players have played in at least 10 of these games with 5 notching up a full house - Dylan Morris, Geraint Parry, Tomos Henry, David Williams and Elgan Rowlands.

March 28th 2008

Jack Roberts and Rhodri Jones have both been selected to play for Wales 'A' under 16s in the Millfield Tournament, which takes place between March 31st and April 6th. The team will play against the likes of England, Scotland and Rumania. This is a great honour for the lads, the Club, coaches and parents and a huge achievement for local rugby. Full details to follow later on. Da iawn hogia !!!!

***

The home game against Rhos will now be played on Wednesday evening April 23rd - kick off 7.15pm. It is now hoped that Rhayader will be willing to play the final League game of the season at Bodegroes on Saturday May 3rd.

***

Dudley and kingswinsford RFC Veterans(Howard Roberts' Club) will play Pwllheli on April 26 in The Howard Roberts Memorial match. Kick off will be at 12.30pm and the game will be a curtain raiser for the First and Second XV games against Wrexham commencing at 2.30pm.

North Wales Rugby Reunion Dinner.

Kenton Morgan the current manager of the North Wales side has ambitious plans to hold a reunion dinner at a central venue. The target date is June this year. Any player - of any era, who has played for North Wales is invited to attend.

The hope is that this venture will bring home what the current coaching and management team are trying to do in North Wales. The cost is likely to be in the region of £30 for a good meal, good company and interesting speakers.

Given sufficient demand coach transport can be arranged. For any ex or indeed current Pwllheli players who played for North Wales the local organiser is Richard 'Tin Tin' Hughes. Alternatively you can direct any query to Kenton directly on K.L.Morgan@liverpool.ac.uk

Saturday March 22nd 2008

Pwllheli v COBRA

This has been a difficult season so far in more ways than one. The Rugby World Cup and the Six Nations Championship has meant a fragmented fixture list. The situation has been worsened by the withdrawal of Bangor, inclement weather before Christmas and the inability of more than one team to fulfill their fixtures.

The result is that the team have not played at home since 11th November 2007, a period of more than 4 months. As you can imagine this has had an adverse effect on the income generated by the Club. More importantly it has been very difficult for players to maintain focus when there have been so many Saturdays without games. At least now the fixture list is full each Saturday until May 3 - and possibly beyond!!!!

Saturday's game will be no walkover and we expect a hard match against COBRA. After losing our 100% record in our last game away at Bethesda the team need to bounce back straight away in order to maintain the pressure on the other teams near the top of the table.

Come and support the team and the Club in the final push towards promotion back to Division 4. As usual 2.30 K.O.

February 14th 2008

Rhayader RFC have just informed us that they are unable to raise a team to travel to Bodegroes on Saturday.

Everyone concerned with the Club are extremely disappointed as I’m sure are supporters to hear this news. It highlights once again the shambles which reigns within the League, a situation we as a Club will do our utmost to change.

All we can do is apologise once again to supporters who were looking forward to seeing the team play.

The next home game is scheduled for March 22nd against COBRA.

*************************

February 11th 2008

Pwllheli’s last home game was the North Wales Cup fixture against Mold on November 17th 2007. Since that day the team has only played four games.

Players and coaches have found it difficult to deal with the constant lengthy breaks which have been a feature of the season, but have managed to maintain their motivation. The season is destined to carry on in the same fashion until the Six Nations is completed.

Clearly this structure is untenable and the Club are committed to press for changes for next season. The Youth team is similarly affected, with only two league fixtures scheduled for the rest of the season. Again this cannot by conducive to the development of rugby.

Our opponents on Saturday are Rhayader travelling to Bodegrroes for the very first time. The corresponding away fixture in October was a tough encounter with players from both sides being yellow carded. We can expect the same commitment from both sides again and hope for good weather and an exciting game.

We look forward to seeing you at Bodegroes on Saturday afternoon –

kick off 2.30 as usual.

November 19th 2007

Saturday's win against Mold in the First Round of the North Wales Cup was both comprehensive and emphatic. Mold the current Champions and leaders of Division 4 North were overwhelmed by an awsome performance by the Pwllheli team. As the Chairman, Wil Martin commented after the game - "I cannot remember the team getting such a rousing reception at half time for many years."

To add to the celebrations the other teams playing all won as well, the Youths at Bangor and no less than five of the Junior teams winning against Llangefni. This is the second time this season that all teams playing on a weekend have won.

***

Late last night the Club received confirmation of the game against the Slovakia National side on the tour next year -Sunday, May 18th 2008 at Bratislava.

***

Robin Elias sounded very cheerful on the phone last night, considering that he's confined to bed and having to miss out on the pleasures of life. I'm sure the result on Saturday will do him a power of good. He's expecting an X-ray examination in the course of the next week. This will give the specialists an indication how the injury is progressing. Hoping for good news and to be out of Hospital soon.

**********************

October 31st 2007

Robin Elias was unfortunately involved in a motor car accident on his way back from the WRU Annual General Meeting on Sunday last. He has damaged ribs and an as yet unspecific back injury. He is currently receiving treatment at the Orthopaedic Ward at Bronglais Hospital, Aberystwyth. Robin is likely to be in hospital for some time. He is being transferred to the Gobowen Orthopaedic Hospital this Friday November 2.

Everyone at the Club sends him our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

October 24th 2007

Disappointing news regarding the Konice Cup game next Saturday.

The Club have decided after much thought that they have no choice but not to send a team to Haverfordwest. There are several reasons, 12 out of the squad of 18 who played against Machynlleth last Saturday were unavailable as they are guests at Mark Saynor's wedding on Saturday. The club approached many other players including those living down in South Wales but with no success. Many of the second team options had already made alternative arrangements for half term.

Pwllheli would only have had one prop available as Billy Brittains' clearance to play did not come through until last night.

This is an unfortunate and sad situation for everyone and the club are to send their sincere regrets to Haverfordwest RFC. The Committee were not willing to take the option of using inexperienced 18 year olds to shoulder the responsibility.

October 16th 2007

A very warm welcome awaits the players, officials and supporters of Machynlleth RFC to Parc Bodegroes on Saturday.

Although we narrowly beat Machynlleth in a pre season friendly once this will be the first ever league fixture between the two Clubs.

We are still very much feeling our way in Division 5 and as was the case in Rhayader last week we do not expect anything other than a battling performance from our visitors today. We have been able to win our opening three matches but the disjointed fixture list and lack of match practice is something we are still coming to terms with.

The lads will need to be on form today to maintain the encouraging start to the season. They all know that we still need a lot of development to fulfill our potential. This is a very young team and everyone needs to pull together if we are to achieve our goal of Division Four status again.

For those of you who can bear to watch, the Rugby World Cup Final should be a nail biting affair. Feel free to watch it on the big screen at the Club. At the same time why not try our Polish lager - Mrs. Fay Kibblewhite can testify of the effect it had on her husband!!!!

Perhaps more importantly we are also hosting an auction to raise money for MacDonald House at The Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. I, like many others involved in the Club have reason to be very grateful for their wonderful work. Tin Tin's nephew is the latest to receive major heart surgery there during September. Rhys was just a fortnight old at the time.It at Tin Tin's request that we have agreed to host this fundraiser.

Today also sees our Sponsors and Vice Presidents' pre match smoker. It is important that players, of all ages, realise that without their support we would struggle to continue to develop the Club. Lets hope our guests enjoy a few beers and watch an enjoyable match resulting - hopefully -  in a Pwllheli win.

September 26th 2007

The Club has been asked to become involved in fundraising for MacDonald House at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool.

Local youngsters have been treated there over many years and this is an opportunity for us to give something back.

TRYSTAN RHYS WHELDON HUGHES who was born on September 10th this year has
recently undergone heart surgery at the Hospital and thankfully is doing well.
For his family this has of course been a harrowing and difficult time.

The accomodation provided by MacDonald House has meant that they have been able to stay with Trystan throughout his ordeal. The facility is wholly dependent on public donations and as a family member of one of our players, we have committed to assist in our own small way.

The club will be holding an auction of sporting and other items at the Clubhouse following the Machynlleth match on October 20th.

Amongst the items will be :

A pair of tickets for any of Wales' home 6 nations matches next spring, donated by the Club.

Half a ton of coal from Tanwydd Llithfaen .

Digital phone/camera from Fferyllfa R.J.Jones,Nefyn.

Meal for two with wine at Portmeirion.

Voucher from Karen's Hairdessers.

A cross section of rugby shirts and tops.

Plus an increasing number of other items.

If you can't attend but wish to donate cheques to CLWB RYGBI PWLLHELI please.

Thanks for your support.

All proceeds will go to MacDonald House.

Please come to support and please dig deep. We all know children who have received
lifesaving treatment at this wonderful Hospital.

Further details from Wil Martin on 0791 999 08 69

or

Richard Hughes on 0783 367 2975.

Auction will be followed by the RUGBY World Cup final on the big screen.

The Club has decided not to tour the USA as originally planned at the end of this season. It has now been decided to go on a short haul tour to Slovakia and the Czech Republic in May 2008 with a long haul tour now being planned for 2009.

The initial itinerary will be :

Fly to PRAGUE for two nights with one senior match.

Travel by train to HAVIROV. Stay in OSTRAVA for three nights. Play against HAVIROV on Saturday 17 May 2008.

By train or coach to BRATISLAVA for 2/3 nights where arrangements are in hand for one match.

£50 deposits are now being accepted from players and members of the club.

If this tour is half as enjoyable as the last one it will be a huge success.

September 18th 2007

Welshpool are the visitors to Bodegroes for the first ever home game in Division Five North on Saturday afternoon. A warm welcome awaits the players, supporters and officials of both teams. Though our opponents are yet to win a match this season we know them of old and are sure they will be a difficult team to play. We shall certainly not underestimate them.

Our opening game of the season saw us come away from Bangor with a substantial win. Despite this it is clearly a case of work in progress as this new and very young side begin to gel.

Significant changes have taken place since the end of last season. David Martin has taken over as Head Coach with Geraint Parry as Club captain. No fewer than eight of the Clubs' seasoned players are missing this year and you will be presented with a very young team for Saturday's game. This is the future of the Club.

Congratulations to the SEVEN Pwllheli players who represented North Wales under 16s in their hugely significant win over the SCARLETS AT Llanidloes recently. Let’s hope this is a sign of things to come.

Off pitch our infrastructure continues to improve .We have completed a fifty plus meter concreted pathway at the town end of the first XV pitch. We are indebted to First Hydro for their support in improving the facilities.

The old implement shed should also have been replaced before our next home match.

The new annual match programme is available from Saturday. May I take this opportunity to thank all our advertisers and sponsors for their invaluable backing. As always we would urge you all to use their services whenever possible.

Thank you for your continuing support,

Wil Martin.

A new scoring system is being introduced for League games as from 1st September.

     4 points for a win

     2 points for a draw

1 point for 4 or more tries

1 point for coming within 7 points in a lost game.

0 points for losing a game by 8+ points and not scoring 4+ tries.

It is hoped the new system - which has been resurrected following its use some 7/8 years ago- will encourage sides to chase tries and make the game more enjoyable for players and supporters alike.

The Junior Section have decided to form an Under 7s side for the first time. Contact the Club for details.

Brilliant news about Elgan Rees Jones following his injury a forthnight ago. Elgan has been home from Hospital since last Friday. He will have to wear a body cast for some weeks but he is mobile. He is in good spirits and no doubt would like to hear from you so why not pay him a visit. The verdict on the injury was a crushed vertebrae but the good news is that it will not affect him in the future in any way.

Tickets for Caffi Basra - Sioe Bara Caws available now from Siop Alan Gwallt a Llên Llýn and the COWBOIS RHOS BOTWNNOG gig on sale by the end of the week.

Why not come and watch the Wales v Argentina game on the big screen at the Club on Saturday afternoon. Food also available.

The Club's Annual Dinner and presentation night was delayed until last night due to the Club's tour to Poland and the Czech Republic, but it was well worth waiting for. The Club was full to the brim and everyone had a night to remember. John prepared an excellent meal as usual and we were entertained regally by the guest speaker, Dilwyn Morgan from Bala.

Awards were presented as follows :

1st team player of the year - Meilir Hughes

2nd XV player of the year - Tom Meyerratken

Youths player of the year - Ifan "Post"

Most improved player - Matthew Hicks

A special award in appreciation of his services, was presented to Robin Elias following his resignation as 1st team manager after a period of ten years.

"Mentioned in dispatches" was Dilwyn Jones following his devotion to duty and sterling work during the Tour.

Nearly £1000 was collected during the night in aid of the Bryan Davies Appeal Fund. Bryan, the Bala player was seriously injured in his final game for the Club at the end of last season. Many thanks to one and all for the generous contributions towards this worthy cause.

It is obvious that everyone within the Club are pulling together and if effort and commitment is any measure things look very bright indeed looking to the future.

Elgan Rees Jones was unfortunately injured during the training session last night 31st July. In a complete accident two players collided leaving Elgan with an injury to his "lower back". Paramedics were in attendance and he was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery goes out to Elgan.

It's important that you lock your doors and keep your daughters safe - Alan Hodgson, the younger and somewhat more boisterous of the Hodgson brothers is back in town, after a pleasingly long break of five years!! Thankfully he is only home for a few weeks, so perhaps you could book your holiday for that time???

In the unlikely event that you would like to see him he will be having a small - a very small - get together at the Club on Friday evening August 10th. Curry will be provided on Alan - though his dad will probably be paying. We'll let you know when he's gone back to Aspen Colorado!!!!!!!

Club members spent their Saturday morning planting trees around the perimeter of the first team pitch. Some areas had not been replenished since the impressive spread of elms was lost some years ago. A mixture of silver birch, mountain ash and cherry trees were planted.

The Club are extremely grateful to Tyddyn Sachau Nurseries, Y Ffor who donated the trees as part of their sponsorship of the Club.

More work needs to be done but this first phase will have a positive visual impact on the Clubs' amenities.

Junior Ladies Rugby.

The Club is extremely keen to establish a junior ladies rugby side by the start of the 2007/08 season. There is clearly a demand locally for such a team.

The Club will provide all the facilities, pitches, changing rooms, shirts, equipment etc.

But we do need to recruit a suitably qualified coach. We would welcome hearing from anyone who is potentially interested in this role.

Contact David Martin - Head Coach on 07833 536 301 in the first instance.
