I'm sure that most of you who live locally will have heard about the tragedy that befell Bryan Davies from Clwb Rygbi Bala recently. For those who live further afield Bryan was seriously injured in his final game for the Club, an injury which will most likely leave him paralysed from the neck down.

His friends from the Rugby Club recently opened an appeal to help Bryan and the family. Click on the photo to move to a new web site which has been set up where you can make contributions.

An ex-team mate of Bryan's, Dilwyn Morgan has decided to cycle ride from Land's End to John O'Groats later on this year in aid of the appeal. More details of this to follow.

Our thoughts at Clwb Rygbi Pwllheli are with Bryan, Sue and the children.

Annual General Meeting

May 1st 2007

There was an exceptionally good turnout at the AGM on Tuesday night, May 1st 2007. It was heartening that so many players made the effort to attend the meeting and contributed to the discussions.

There is naturally a sense of disappointment within the Club following the First Teams’ relegation from Division IV of the North Wales League. This is  especially so after the match on Saturday when the team  did enough to earn the points. Wil Martin in his address thanked the players, coaches and committee for their efforts throughout the season and also to the 80 or so supporters who travelled to Ruthin to support the team.

Far from being downhearted it appeared that players and all involved are up to the challenge and are looking forward to next season.

During the formal part of the AGM all existing officers were re-elected unopposed.

The rugby committee recommended that the club coach/es and team captains should be appointed from within the Club for next season. In addition the Club coach would have sole responsibility for team selection. These proposals were ratified unanimously by the meeting. Appointments will be made before the beginning of June. The Club has also decided that it would not be actively looking for foreign players for next season.

There will a conscious effort in co-ordinating training from Youths right through to the First XV and a system of tracking players would be instituted to facilitate this. It was agreed that a formal database would be made available to the new coach.

Despite the  trauma suffered by the First XV, the other teams at the Club can take great heart from their performances this season. The 2nd XV finished a creditable third in the Gwynedd League and there was clear and positive development within the Youth structure.

The Juniors excelled with all three age groups reaching the Finals of the Eryri Cup, the under 12 and 16 teams beating Nant Conwy and Colwyn Bay respectively in the Finals and the under 14s losing to a strong Caernarfon side.

Wil Martin noted that Pavel Indrak and Radim Fajkus were returning home shortly. He acknowledged their substantial contribution to the Team and extended the Club's very best wishes to both for the future.

*****

May 1st 2007

After missing the game against Russia two weeks ago Pavel Indrak has again been included in the Czech squad to face Spain at home on May 5th 2007.

This will be the third time in less than 12 months that the teams have played each other. The first two games were qualifying matches for this years’ Rugby World Cup and although the Czechs lost both matches they will go into this game with a realistic chance of improving on the previous encounters.

Spain lie two places above the Republic having won one of the four games played in the group with the home side welcoming four players who play in France into their squad.

Ruthin 29 Pwllheli 24

Despite the valiant efforts of the team we lost our final match of the season in the most disappointing of circumstances. Having twice held a 10 point lead our destiny pointed to survival and life in Division IV again next season.

This was before we lost two players through yellow cards and for a period of five minutes only had 13 players on the pitch.Since all this occurred deep into the fourth quatrter of the match there was no time for a deserved comeback. The actions of some opposition players in the first dismissal was sad to see and more reminiscent of scenes normallly encountered on the soccer pitch.

As a matter of interest the first half lasted no less than 54 minutes and the second 49 minutes - a total of 103 minutes as opposed to the normal 80.

The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank the players, coaches and the large group of travelling supporters for their efforts.

Our best wishes of course go to Dai Davies and the Newtown Club on retention of their Division IV League status.

April 24th 2007

The Club has arranged buses to go to Ruthin, everybody welcome - buses leave Bodegroes 11.30am - come and support the lads

April 18th 2007

The Club have decided after much deliberation to concede the forthcoming Gwynedd Cup Quarter Final game at home to Mold scheduled for April 21st. This decision was taken because of a shortage of front row players and to avoid any further injuries before the Club's most important game for many years, away against Ruthin next Saturday April 28th.

In addition to our already lengthy injury list, Geraint Parry injured his ankle last Saturday, Pavel Indrak is away with the Czech Republic and both Mike Adams and David 'Wilo' Williams were unavailable to play. In addition both Tryfan Edwards and Rhodri Scott are not available again this season.

Annual General Meeting

Tuesday 1st May 2007 7.15pm

The Club's AGM has been convened for Tuesday May 1st 2007 at Bodegroes - 7.15pm.

The meeting is open to all club members and all are encouraged to attend.

The AGM will cover the election of Officers and outline plans for 2007/2008 season. It will also include a forum to discuss this season and the 1st XV in particular.

There will be a chance for you to air your views about the way the Club is run and how we can improve things for the future. Suggestions, proposals and criticism will all be on the table for discussion.

April 11th 2007

Marc West was seriously injured in the course of the game on Saturday and has returned to the USA for treatment on his knee. He will not be fit again this season. Marc developed greatly as a player during his stay in Pwllheli. He was very popular, well liked and mixed with everyone. We wish him all the best for the future. Marc is the ninth player this season to have suffered a serious injury.

*****

The Club will be arranging an open meeting soon after the Ruthin game. This is a chance for anyone connected with the Club to have their say before planning for next season. An opportunity for you to voice you opinion about the way things have gone and the way forward. All feedback will be welcomed.

Details available here shortly.

The Czech Republic were heavily beaten in Tiblisi yesterday against a strong Georgia side . The Czechs are going through a process of re-building at the moment and had an inexperienced squad going into the game, fifteen of them having made less than 10 appearances for the National side, with three players making their debuts. All but three of the Czech players ply their trade at home, while 19 out of the squad of 22 Georgians play in France.

Georgia move to the top of Division 1 in the competition with this win while the Czechs are firmly rooted to the bottom, the only team without a win. They will be hoping for a better result when they play next, away to Russia on April 21st.

April 5th 2007

Three League games remaining but still three points behind Denbigh who have a game in hand and the prospect of three home games, one of these against already relegated Wrexham next week to look forward to. The situation does not look good but Pwllheli will not give up without a fight.

Newtown are by no means clear either. Although they stand five points ahead of us on 18 points they have two games remaining, home to Mold this week and away at Nant Conwy next Saturday. If these games go to form they may well finish on 18 points.

Pwllheli need to win at least two of the last three games to have any chance of remaining in Division IV next season. Saturday's game against Colwyn Bay is crucial. Having just lost 6-3 away against them earlier in the season there is no reason why we can't turn the tables, and the lads are confident after last week's performance that we can pull it off.

Pavel Indrak is again on duty with the Czech Republic against Georgia and Elgan Rowlands has picked up an injury, so Tryfan Edwards and James Collins make up the squad.

Come and show support for the team - kick off 2.30pm.

April 2nd 2007

On Friday April 6th Dr Dewi Wyn Roberts is inaugurated as the High Sheriff of Gwynedd. Dr Roberts returns to the old Ysgol David Hughes School, Beaumaris for his declaration.

The Office of High Sheriff is at least 1,000 years old having its roots in Saxon times before the Norman Conquest. It is the oldest continuous secular Office under the Crown. Originally the Office held many of the powers now vested in Lord Lieutenants, High Court Judges, Magistrates, Local Authorities, Coroners and even the Inland Revenue.

Dr Roberts intends bringing a modern perspective to the post by dispelling any thought of it being in any way remote, involving a wide cross section of the community.

High Sheriffs have their own charity fund to support during their year in office. Most of the money raised will go to Crimebeat, the charity, aiming to divert young people away from crime.

Dr Roberts is Chairman and Honorary Medical Officer of the Pwllheli Sports Club. He was a Welsh Schools’ sprint champion and record holder, Welsh AAA youth and junior champion, a Cambridge athletics Blue, having won the 100 yards sprint in the 1961 Varsity Match, and team manager for Oxford and Cambridge from 1961 and 2005.

He is also the Chairman of the Achilles Club, formed in 1920, by and for the past and present members of Oxford and Cambridge Athletics Clubs. It can trace its roots back to the first Athletics sports between Oxford and Cambridge in 1864. Only members of OUAC and CUAC who have competed in the Varsity Match are invited to join the Achilles Club.

This is naturally a great personal honour and the Club is fortunate to be able to count Dr Dewi as one of us.

March 17th 2007

It would be fair to say that results have not gone Pwllheli’s way for many weeks now and consequently the team find themselves in a dogfight at the base of Division IV of the League. The team has failed to reproduce the sparkling form they showed in the opening weeks of the season with the annihilation of the North Wales Barbarians in August, the sparkling wins in the Konica Minolta Cup and the trouncing of Wrexham in the League.

It is no coincidence that this dip in form has coincided with several serious injuries which has deprived the side of talented and experienced players. This has given an early chance to some youngsters to show their ability. They have not disappointed and with some sterling performances have taken many of these games literally to the wire.

The Chairman, Wil Martin is full of praise for these youngsters and remains upbeat about the outcome for the season.

“Although results lately have been disappointing on the whole most of these games could have ended differently. Losing by four points at Nant Conwy, by three at Colwyn Bay and coming within a point of Nant in our last game before yielding a late try proves the point.

One of the most important games of the season without doubt is ahead of us on Saturday however. With Denbigh only below Pwllheli on try count and with a game in hand this is a six pointer. The team have had a couple of weeks to regroup and prepare and are ready for the challenge ahead, as no doubt Denbigh will be as well.

The lads are coping well with the pressure and with clear leadership and a solid game plan we can come away with a win on Saturday.” said Wil Martin.

There is a feeling within the Club that a huge performance is just around the corner. Let’s hope that Saturday is the day that Pwllheli play to their potential.

Come and support the side at Denbigh next Saturday.

The Club have arranged a coach to travel to the game.

Everyone welcome - the more the merrier.

Pavel Indrak was selected to play for the Czech Republic against Rumania today in a competition run under FIRA.The Fédération Internationale de Rugby Amateur is an international association that was set up in 1934 by 10 founding unions and whose membership is made up of national rugby unions. The Czech Republic are in Division 1 of a competition running between September 2006 and June 2008 along with Romania, Georgia, Spain, Russia and Portugal. This was their opening game in the group.

Unfortunately Pavel's team lost by 13-46, but it was good to see the name of Pwllheli Rugby Club mentioned on the team sheet for the game as noted below.

15 Snídal Martin (Vyškov) – 14 Kodera Roman (Rícany), 13 Vokrouhlík Pavel (Sparta), 12 Tomcík Jaroslav (Havírov), 11 Okleštek Petr(Sparta) – 10 Brabec Antonín(Tatra) , 9 Syrový Pavel (Praga)
8 Leroch Patrik
(Havírov) , 7. Hudák Martin (Vyškov), 6 Madry Vlastimil (Praga) – 5 Nemecek Miroslav(Rícany),4 Voves Robert-USA Limoges FRA – 3 Indrák Pavel-Pwllhelli WAL, 2 Oswald Jan-Tatra , 1 Skall Jirí-Sparta

Their next game is away to Georgia on the 7th April 2007.

Pwllheli's catalogue of disastrous injuries continues with the news that centre/full back David 'Wilo' Williams was hospitalised following the Newtown game after damaging a kidney. Thankfully the prognosis is excellent for a full recovery. Our best wishes go out to him and the rest of the family at this worrying time. Wilo will not be able to play again this season.

There is very little good news regarding the other absentees. Terry Adams will not be fit to play again this season. Likewise Richard Hughes. Mike Adams has had an operation to repair a tendon in his hand and is hoping to be fit in March. Aled Griffiths is also hoping to play in March after dislocating his knee some months ago.

Prop Kevin Morris hopes to be fit again within a months or so.

Tryfan Edwards will make the occasional appearance between now and the end of the season. His work commitments in London do not allow him to play as often as he would like.

Prior to the commencement of the game on Saturday players, officials and spectators took part in a minute's silence in memory of Mr Frank Oliver, Lee's father, who sadly passed away during the week. The Club has lost a keen and loyal supporter.

Donations in memory of Frank during the funeral service have been kindly donated to the Rugby Club.

I'm sure that you would wish to join me in sending our deepest sympathy to Mrs Oliver, Lee and the rest of the family in their loss.

January 17th 2007

Caernarfon Rugby Club are the visitors to Bodegroes on Saturday. Lying third in the League they will be confident of doing the double over Pwllheli for the first time in more than a decade. The lads won’t need to be psyched up for this encounter. Lets hope that the weather settles down and the gales forecast subside before Saturday.

The team remains in the middle of an injury crisis but the selection committee and coaches have every faith in the ability of the youngsters selected. Morale within the squad remains high despite some indifferent results in recent weeks. What better stage to show Lleyn rugby at its best than against the Cofis.

A win on Saturday could see the side leapfrog above Wrexham and away from the basement of the table. Come and support the lads.

January 7th 2007

Pwllheli's head coach Wyn Isaac has reluctantly decided that he's unable to commit the time necessary to fulfill his duties in the way he would like. Given this fact he has decided to hand over the head coach's role to ex-Pwllheli prop Arthur Williams. This change will have immediate effect. The club will maintain its links with Wyn via individual coaching sessions.

Chairman Wil Martin noted the club's appreciation of Wyn's efforts over the past few difficult months.

In a further blow club captain Tryfan Edwards has given up the captaincy of the Club to take up a marketing post in London. Despite his MA qualification he was unable to get job security here in North Wales. It is hoped that Tryfan will be available for some of the matches in the next four weeks, a crucial and testing period for the Club.

To prove the maxim that bad news comes in threes, vice captain Richard Hughes will be out of action for the next few months at least with a compressed fracture of the vertebrae. The Club's best wishes for a speedy recovery go Tin Tin. This is the fifth fracture to players of the Pwllheli first team squad this season.

On the positive side Lee Oliver has agreed to take over the captaincy for the rest of the season. Lee captained the club for the last three seasons and his experience will be invaluable.

Pwllheli face a difficult trip to Llandudno on Saturday. The club's management continue to have confidence in the potential of its first team squad and although it will be a very young team that faces Llandudno they have the ability to secure a result.

Supporters are urged to back the side.

*****

Following a recent incident at the Club all club coaches and officials have now been instructed to request the attendance of an ambulance if any player is knocked out - even if this is only for a short time.

*****

The Club is increasingly concerned regarding the Health and Safety implications of the large numbers using the car park. This is particulary so on Tuesday evenings with so many juniors being brought to training. Drivers are asked to be particularly careful and vigilant when entering and leaving the Car Park.

Preparations are already in hand to install lighting to improve matters, An application for grant aid to re-structure the car park and install walkways, bollards etc. to make it safer for alla users has been submitted. Unfortunately there seems to be delay after delay in processing the application and the signs at present are not good even though the need has been clearly demonstrated.

The Sports Club Committee will look at the situation in their November meeting. It may be that pending work on the car park, that junior training will have to take place on two nights rather than one.

*****

The first team nightmare regarding serious injuries continues. Mike Adame is the latest casualty. He has now found out that he broke his arm in the Rhydyfelin match! We are keeping our fingers crossed that he makes a quick recovery and be available for the Abercynon match in the next round of the Konica Minolta Cup. Mike joins his brother Terry and Pavel Indrak with rugby sustained fractures this season.

*****

Pwllheli have been drawn away to First Division Abercynon RFC in the Fourth Round of the Konica Minolta Cup. The match is to be played on Saturday 16th December. Coaches and hotel accomodation will be arranged for supporters who wish to travel - contact the Club for details.

*****

The first team squad have suffered another major injury blow with the news thta Czech prop Pavel Indrak broke his wrist in the Newtown match. It is hoped that he recovers by early December. We wish Pavel a full and speedy recovery.

The same wishes for a quick recovery goea out to Dylan Morris who had to leave the field in the match against Wrexham with a head injury. He was treated in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and received 27 stitches in the wound. The Club are looking no further than a fellow club member - who used to be a coal miner in the Czech Republic as the likely culprit who caused the accident.

*****

The Club have agreed an exchange programme with a rugby club in San Fransisco. Two American players - Anthony Guirdy and prop Chris Rockwell have arrived in Pwllheli and will be playing for our youth side. Two lucky Pwllheli youngsters will than be offered a four month stint out in California. This is the latest of arrangements made by the Club to broaden the experience of its younger players.

*****

The Howard Roberts Memorial match held at the Club on Sunday August 27th 2006 raised £1000. This sum is to be split equally between Howard's family and the purchase of a portable defibrilator for the Club. The Club wishes to express its gratitude to all who supported the event.

*****

The Club are extremely delighted to be able to announce the selection of Pwllheli prop, Pavel Indrak in the Czech Republic squad to play a World Cup qualifying match for the games against Spain on Septmebr 16th and 30th. We wish him well.

*****

The Club hels its Fourth Annual Summer Rugby School between August 7th and Friday 25th. The School ran for five days each week for the three week period. Commencing at 9.30am and ending at 3.15am the service was free thanks to a grant from Cyngor Gwynedd and Scottish Power. Pwllheli RFC are grateful to both for their continuing support. The age groups who took part were between 8 and 14.

Following discussions with all concerned the format this yaer was amended to include more rugby and more competition. There were daily matches so that the children were kept involved throughout the day.
